Shilo discusses how she relates to the term “body sovereignty” she learned from Cherokee poet Quo-li Driskill. Shilo talks about the healing and reclamation work that she’s done around her body and how body sovereignty has provided the framework to that kind of work for the Indigenous body. She describes the colonial “rules” around the body: diet and move experience dismemberment through intergenerational trauma. She also discusses childhood trauma around her body and lack of ownership and autonomy over her own bodies and experiences.
Shilo describes being excited about the uptick in superfat visibility online as well as some of the traditional health work happening in her community. Both Shilo and Jana’s ONE COOL THINGS are gratitude for their community collaborators of color in the queer, fat and social justice world.
