In the interview, Virgie discusses her upbringing as a Mexican and Iranian woman and her first introduction to fatphobia as a young girl. She discusses the Mexican traditions she was raised with and the ways in which her family treated her like a “little queen” before being made aware of her fatness and the indoctrination of fatphobia in educational settings and cultural settings. Upon learning about the horrors of being considered fat in our culture, Virgie describes her plunge into dieting and ultimately she describes the two as existing on a spectrum of disordered eating. However challenging the world made it for her to embrace her body as a young woman of size, Virgie found the subversions in her interactions with heterosexuality and listening to her sexuality.
Virgie is working on another book about body justice for young women of color to be released in 2019. Her current book, You Have the Right to Remain Fat is available on Amazon and through The Feminist Press. Buy it!!!
