Wendi is a leftist anti-racist and argues that the fundamental texts and teachings of leftist politics do synthesize the ills of racism, classicism, sexism and homophobia. Her doctoral work at NYU is in Brazilian History and Leftists from Brazil and Anti-colonial Activism in Brazil. Her research has led her to believe that leftist movements, anti-colonial movements and anti-racist movements go hand-in-hand and absolutely inform how a people relate to themselves, relate one another and engage in work around race and racism. Wendi embarked on this field of work after studying Portuguese in Brazil in 2004, connecting with the people of Brazil and learning about the history of slavery in Brazil which is far more pronounced than slavery in the U.S. After teaching English in Brazil and getting to know many African, specifically Angolan students studying in Brazil, Wendi embarked on the study of Brazilian History, the history of enslavement and the connection and communication between Brazil and Africa.
Wendi takes us on a deep dive into her own political leanings here in the U.S. being left of the Democratic party and helps us to come to terms with our own “a la carte leftism.” She takes on the issue of Indigenous blood quantum with Jana, anti-racist politics amongst white politicians, racialized rhetoric versus anti-racist action. The ladies culminate the interview with Wendi discussing current fascist President Bulsonaro and the Quilombos of Brazil, who Bolsonaro wants to steal land from to hand over to agricultural conglomerates.
Wendi’s One Cool Thing is a podcast called Millenials Are Killing Capitalism. She specifically shouts out episode #27 called Trans Liberation Through Decolonial Marxism. We will tune in!
