Diving into Shrill, the ladies give all of their shout outs and accolades. They start by identifying with Annie’s relationship with fuckboi Ryan as well as the intimate moments she shares with Amadi. The ladies discuss how powerful it is seeing fat sex represented on tv and compare it to other shows and movies that representation moved them as audience members.
They shout out all of the beautiful plus size babes in the show as extras, living in their bodies and feelin’ themselves! The ladies identify strongly with the character of Annie, and the fact that she is not a shrinking violet and runs her professional life with ambition and motivation whether she loves her body or not.
Trolling also comes up and the ladies discuss their own relationship with internet trolls as well as debriefing the way the Lindy West writes about her trolling experiences. They share life hacks about “reading the comments,” something you’re not supposed to do if you create fat-related comments. They also talk about the fat-shamers we work with and live with, those exhibiting fatphobia in our lives.
Of course there are a few criticisms of the show but ultimately the ladies land on the notion that Shrill is wonderful and it doesn’t represent (nor does it try) every fat person’s experience. It just goes to show that fat people on tv can and should exist, whether fatness is central to their narrative or not.
The ladies close out the episode by pitching their own fat lady storylines!
