Jana and Abby became friends in the year 2000 when they both worked at the University of Oregon Multicultural Center organizing for racial and social justice and support the ethnic and cultural student unions. In this episode, Abby discusses that she prefers to be with and is married to a man of size. Abby is one who's weight has fluctuated a lot throughout her life and she states that a lot of that has to do with the male gaze and her ability to see her personal vision through her work. She's currently through a "geriatric pregnancy" as being pregnant has been on her bucket list. Abby having a baby is helping Jana see through her goals to be the coolest aunt in the world!
Jana and Abby discuss their journey through BDCA or Bronx Design and Construction Academy and Abbys vision around creating a school that values inclusion and opportunity for all students. Abby goes deep into her positionally teaching and leading in the Bronx and in urban public education. But it's very difficult to build an environment of inclusion within a non-inclusive system. It sucks one of one's life force! Which is why Abby and Jana always relied on each other for support and the support of women like Nina Dibner and Evette Avila, other female mentors in educational leadership.
Abby is truly incredible at merging her life's vision and her career, and conveying this vision to others. Shout out to Octavia Butler, Abby's favorite author who she quotes quite often.
Abby's One Cool Thing is shapewear by Shymay and bra company Soma. Jana shouts out beyondbuckskin.com for clothing and jewelry and accessories created and sold by indigenous designers.
On this episode, we also hear from my good friend Minnie Goode as she discusses the lack of accessibility at Disneyland and the discriminatory practices she's been noticing as a nanny in Los Angeles.
