Nancy and Jana became friends while organizing for their ethnic and cultural student unions in college. Nancy's parents are Mien political refugees from a small, indigenous hill village in Laos. As an Asian American, Nancy feels like she is constantly having to defend her Americanness to white patriarchy.
Nancy describes her fetishized, eroticized and hyper-sexualized Asian woman's body. Can you believe that when she entered womanhood, many white women have told Nancy, "Oh you'll have no problem getting a boyfriend." Damn! Fetishization happens frequently to Nancy in the dating world, however Nancy speaks to the fact that everyone is a "little more woke" in New York City, so it has happened to her less since she moved there. Nancy's hard and fast dating rule is: if he has dated an Asian American woman before her, it's gonna be a no. Jana relates by discussing fetishization of Native women and how she was harmlessly fetishized as teen.
"Tolerance" was the 90s' answer to racism and both Nancy and Jana performed cultural presentations for their schools growing up. Portland is predominantly white and liberal but also has several immigrant and refugee neighborhoods, so Nancy learned how to negotiate race dynamics very early in her life, unlike Jana's very white small town experiences. Nancy talks about the racist urban legend that "Asian women's vagina's are slanted". She also breaks down the expectations of Asian women's bodies within Asian communities among moms, aunties and Grandmas, especially around marriage and the need to be valued by the male gaze.
Nancy and Jana GO IN on that stupid fucking movie The Duff and talk about their hilarious new movement, Duffs Rise Up. Nancy's One Cool Thing is a period-tracking app called Clue. Let's all download this app so we can stop ruining our goddamn underwear! Also, the focal point of the period tracking is not around fertility which many period-tracking apps support, but around women's health. It does so by tracking qualitative data during menstruation. Jana's One Cool thing is hilarious lifestyle and fashion vlogger, Marissa Con Queso.
