Lillian Bustle andLiza Poor are the hosts of the Body Poscast, a podcast about body positivity. These two ladies are also performers; Lillian has a TedTalk about being fat and in burlesque and Liza is a theater artist and vocalist. They became friends through theater and then developed a relationship around their discussion about body positivity, eventually creating the Body Poscast.
Jana, Lillian and Liza talk about the differences between podcasting and performing live. They all understand the importance of the sensitive discussions their having on their podcasts and want to have more audience engagement! In terms of their bodies, Lillian uses the word fat with regularity and has for a long time. Liza uses fat a lot but she really dislikes the immediate kickback from straight sized people who immediately say, "You're not fat!" The ladies discuss how to help straight sized people feel comfortable with how we want to describe our bodies. There are so many knee-jerks with the term fat so we need to figure out a way to not be discriminated against. Lillian discusses a medical issue that she's having with a doctor who won't help her until she "loses weight," so there are major issues that underscore fatphobia.
Lillian discusses how sizeism crops up in the burlesque space and backstage in theater. The ladies discuss how to be "that person" who always asks for kindness about our bodies. Of course the push for diversity in burlesque will ultimately help us come into acceptance around size as well as other than non-binary and racial diversity.
Lillian discusses how the same competitive and masculine outlook that happens in film and television casting happens in the burlesque world. Realistically it's happening in all fields. We owe it to ourselves and others to bring diversity to your field. And the work doesn't stop there because tokenization is a real thing. Lastly, the three ladies take some time to give Lane Bryant some hell.
Liza's One Cool Thing is a podcast called Punch Up the Jam where these two people punch up already made songs. It's fun and funny and a great recommendation! Lillian's One Cool Thing are The Lady Queens, Switch and Play and Beef Show, all drag shows in New York that aren't Drag Race. Jana's One Cool Thing is a Native artist and beadworker named Jamie Okuma and her work mixes traditional beadwork with contemporary fashion.
You can read an essay by Lillian in the book My Body My Words and follow The Body Poscast!
