Beth Newell is the creator, co-founder and editor of Reductress, a satirical women's magazine. She is also the co-author of the book How to Win at Feminism and a pillar in the comedy community in New York City. Her and Jana are friends and peers from improv and sketch and when Beth became pregnant with her son Bryn, her husband Peter and her moved upstate and out of the city.
Reductress just released the Reductress Minute podcast and you should rate and review this pod as well as any of the pods you consume! Beth describes how hateful some of the ratings and reviews have been on the other Reductress podcast called Mouthtime because men claim to hate women's voices! So that's a fun battle women will always be waging. Jana and Beth talk about the difficulty putting out female/femme-centered content because men are not used ingesting content that doesn't center their stories. Beth discusses how men tend to engage with Reductress on their website but rarely on social media.
Beth discusses her insecurities and how she doesn't speak about her body as positively as she would like. After having two children, she has less time to feel concerned about her appearance which in a sense is relieving. But she still feels as if her body has changed, her ability to lose baby weight to get back to feeling herself is something she would like. Beth talks about her having thyroid cancer during her second pregnancy, getting her thyroid removed and wanting to just get on with life after that.
The two women then transition into developing comedy spaces for women, at the Magnet Theater, in Reductress and continuing to provide platforms where women in comedy are respected and amplified. Imposter syndrom is a real experience that marginalized people encounter in specific spaces. Beth equates running a small business to being a mother, both are stressful require all mental capacities. Beth describes collaborating around a passion project like Reductress, the struggle of running this business.
Beth's One Cool Thing is the Instagram account @SiennaLaLau and her incredible dancing and choreography. Jana's One Cool Thing is once again Powerful Women Rising, her friend Sara's small business providing affordable professional development for women.
