Gloria Lucas identifies as Xicana, Brown and chubby and she uses the pronouns she/her. Gloria is the founder of Nalgona Positivity Pride, an organization that provides intersectional eating disorder education and a community of support for people of color struggling with disordered eating and poor body image. Gloria tells Jana about her journey toward creating NPP after having an eating disorder herself and suffering silently for a long time, especially as a young woman growing up in a low-income household. She faced countless obstacles and barriers in receiving treatment for her eating disorder and built NPP after understanding the systemic injustices at the intersection of race, income, the health industry and ED.
Gloria and Jana have a discussion about how she approaches menstruation and how her ideas about menstruation have been developed over time. She discusses what she’s learned about different parts of the menstrual cycle and how it affects the body and mind. The two also discuss desiring time off of work around menstruation and how this concept is not radical at all.
