Kat and Jana discuss being white-coded, having family members who do not pass and how they could never blame anyone for quieting their Native identity and move through the world navigating anti-Indigenous racism. Kat is relearning her own Indigenous language as well as the languages of the places in which she lives and the language of her Native Alaskan husband.
Kat and Jana discuss the Elizabeth Warren issue and online microaggressions that Native people often incur, especially around politically heightened moments in mainstream media. Kat brings up the “America is a Nation of immigrants!” quote that folks like to throw around which silences the existence of Indigenous people on this land. When AOC said it and got called in by Katherine Cricket Crocker on Twitter, AOC actually apologized, which is more humanity than Native people usually get! Of course, the same courtesy was not provided by Warren and the two dissect that issue at length. Another issue that they discuss are Black Indigeneity and how there is a lot of anti-Black rhetoric and thought within colonized Native communities.
Kat closes out the interview by discussing how fat acceptance plays out in the many different places she’s lived all over the world. She grew up in Saudi Arabia, lived in Canada and found the most body acceptance - surprisingly - in Japan. She illustrates this experience in discussing Japanese communal baths.
