Chelsea discusses with Jana her sobriety and how she came to embarking on addiction recovery and searching for tribal programs that might be able to support her. Chelsea’s father grew up on the Yakima Reservation and struggled with addiction and participated in the tribe’s recovery program. She discusses the “wine culture of motherhood” and the ways her drinking escalated to wind down from the daily grind and old trauma. Chelsea discusses her perspective on the powerlessness reinforced in addiction recovery programs.
Ultimately, despite the fact that Chelsea doesn’t care what you think about her, she’s raising children - a new generation of potential accomplices in the dismantling of fatphobia. Chelsea discusses how she approaches body neutral language with her children and how she communicates to her daughter the language of fat acceptance.
Chelsea proves that many people still feel too fat for fat positivity and that has a lot to do with issues around access for superfat and infinifat people. She describes the nuances of internalized fatphobia and how that manifests in our relations with each other as fat folks. Chelsea pushes the message, “Just try not hating yourself. You don’t have to love yourself.” She wants people to take pictures of themselves and look at those pictures - to normalize looking at your own body.
